Shooting Stars forms for Performances and Visual Arts are available at http://www.wataugaeducationfoundation.org/. The Visual Arts forms were added on January 23 and the deadline for artwork is February 29, a.k.a. Leap Day. Leap Day? What's that? Leap Day is an extra day added at the end of February (February 29) which makes 2012 a Leap Year. Leap Days are needed to keep our calendar working properly. The 365 days of the annual calendar are meant to match up with the solar year. A solar year is the time it takes the Earth to complete its orbit around the Sun — about one year. But the actual time it takes for the Earth to travel around the Sun is in fact a little longer than that—about 365 ¼ days (365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds, to be precise). So the calendar and the solar year don't completely match—the calendar year is a touch shorter than the solar year. If we didn't have Leap Days and Leap Years, then after a couple of centuries, the 4th of July would occur when it was spring and Christmas would occur in the fall. More Leap Year information on infoplease.com.

Meet Our New MS Teacher Mr. Travis Flippin
Please enjoy the short bio Mr. Flippin graciously agreed to share for the school website. "I have previously taught 8th grade Math and Science in Wilkes county, and 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade Science at a K-8 school in Chatham county, NC, as well as serving as their lead technology teacher. Before completing a lateral entry program at NC State, I served a little over ten years in the US Navy, on a fast attack submarine and for the last four years of service as a nuclear instructor at a prototype reactor in upstate New York. I also hold a B.S. in Geology and a M.Ed. in Middle Grades Education. I grew up moving quite a bit, but lived mostly in Washington state and Alaska, where the majority of my family still reside. We moved our now soon to be 2 year old twins to Boone last summer when my wife Michelle accepted a faculty position at Appalachian. We have since added a new son in November, making our house an even more exciting place! I am very excited to be at Blowing Rock and look forward to getting to know my colleagues, students, and their families." -- Mr. Travis FlippinTwo Local Athletic Programs for Kids

WINTER WEATHER COMMUNICATION REMINDER
A reminder of resources that help us be aware of school closings, school delays and early releases: 1) Alert Now -- once your child’s information is in the computer, you will automatically be included in our Alert Now automated phone message system whereby you are notified by phone of school cancellations or delays. Your “primary number” (usually your home phone) will be called if school is cancelled or delayed. If there is a change while school is in session, up to 5 phone numbers you’ve provided will be called; 2) Snow line – call 264-0200 in the early morning or at the hint of snow/freezing rain to see if school is closed, delayed or being released early; 3) Check your email (for families who have chosen to enter their e-mail address when activating their account on the Watauga County Schools website); 4) Check local radio and TV stations as noted on the district web page … under Parent Links … School Closing Guide Winter Weather; 5) Check Ray's Weather -- our trusted, go-to local weather source at http://booneweather.com/Forecast/Blowing+Rock; and 6) Check Facebook page “Watauga County Road Conditions and Weather Updates”. While this Facebook page is NOT an official resource for school closings or delays, it is an outstanding volunteer effort which has become invaluable to Watauga Facebook savvy parents. It has up to the minute detailed information shared by many local people via the internet and smart phones -- information about road conditions as to snow & ice, traffic accidents and anything else that affects traveling and road safety in Watauga County. Click on the graphic above to see this Facebook page; you do NOT have to be a Facebook member to view this. For any one new to the high country, the end of the school year date is a hopeful, but highly unlikely target due to winter weather. More information on School Closings can be found on the District website under Parent Links ... School Closing Guide -- Winter WeatherGirls Basketball Team

Tip for Veterans from Donna Minton
Ms. Minton has shared an interesting tip about finding veterans' co-veterans. As her father was in the Navy, she was able to register him via http://www.navymemorial.org/NavyLog/tabid/58/Default.aspx. This allowed a fellow veteran to find her 84 year old father and give him a call! Other military branches have similar registration websites, reports Ms. Minton.

Veteran Tim Sukow, father of Principal Patrick Sukow, participated in the Veteran Day Parade and then spoke to the 8th grade class. Mr. Sukow is an expert on air safety and practices and continues to work in that field. He earned his considerable safety experience in his various leadership positions which included White House Presidential Command Pilot for President Reagan, Commanding Officer Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 262, and Assistant Dean of Academics, Marine Corps Command and Staff College. He later served as Director of Safety and Standardization, Fleet Marine Forces Pacific, where he was responsible for the safety and standardization of all Marine aviation assets west of the Mississippi to the western edge of Asia. On Thursday, November 4, Blowing Rock 4th Graders presented their annual Spider Exhibit. Each student studies a particular type of spider, creates a model of the type of spider's habitat and explains to viewers what they have learned. Click for more photos in which the pre-kindergarten students visit the Spider Exhibit. Shown above: Matthew G. shows his unique spider habitat which is viewed through holes in the front and has light shining down from the top.
On October 28, students at Blowing Rock School enjoyed dressing up in costume. In a fairly new tradition, younger students (pre-kindergarten on up to 5th) paraded down the Middle School hall with the older students clapping, high fiving and otherwise cheering the younger kids on. Click to view a gazillion photos taken by Interim AIG Teacher Wendy Jessen and BR Substitute Lee Ryan. We have a few movie clips to share soon. The PTO awarded costume prizes to students Isabella T., Taya B., and Lily D. and Door Decoration awards to 1st Grade Teacher Meggan Knight and 4th Grade Teacher Martha Trimble. One of the staff’s favorite costumes was that of Michael W., a 5th grader, who came dressed as BR/HP Art Teacher Chad Safferstone. A number of staff members and ASU student interns dressed up; particularly noteworthy were Lisa Carlson, a scary Cruella Deville and Debra Gandy, a scary something (zombie?) with red hair and green skin. Yikes.
